Wyangala Waters State Park


WALKING TRAILS

Safety Precautions - It is always good practice to make your intentions known to others of you proposed walk, in case of an emergency.

There are a number of walking trails that have been designed to provide visitors with a variety of walking distances into different areas of Wyangala Waters State Park. All of these walks provide excellent opportunities to enjoy the tranquil bush land and beautiful views of the Lachlan Valley and the Wyangala Dam.

Balancing Rock Trail

Duration :    40 minute

Distance:    1km

This walk is located within close proximity to the main camping and accommodation area. On the "Balancing Rock Trail" visitors will pass an interpretive sign-board information which will indicate the history and some early settlements use of the area and surrounding environment. Giant granite boulders can be found through this trail system and some of these weathered boulders are in fact balancing on other large boulders.

Drover's Trail

Duration:     1 hour and 30 minutes

Distance:     4km

This walk wanders along the ridge-top in a northerly direction from Balancing Rock Trail towards Elliots Lookout. The trail is also used for fire management purposes and is well defined. Visitors on this trail will see the difference between woodlands compared to that of grassland sections of the Park. The trail also wanders through the 1890's gold fields before reaching Elliots Lookout.

Elliots Trail

Duration:    1 hour and 30 minutes

Distance:    5km

This trails starts just below the Cottages in the Main Park area, slowly winding up along the ridge-top past Bills Gully and coming out at Elliots Lookout. This trail also meets up with the Drovers Trail, giving visitors the option of a longer walk on the way home. The ridge-top trail from the Lookout wanders through woodlands towards the Main Camping and Accommodation area of Wyangala Waters.

Flora and Fauna

Bushland communities in this area consist of open woodlands and low open forests of Eucalyptus and Pine species. The vegetation provides habitats for populations of grey kangaroo and rare sightings of small animals such as native mice. Many species of shrub birds and parrots also inhabit the area.
